Connected lighting creates a new landmark in the nighttime sky

Towering 215 m (705 ft) into the Rotterdam skyline, De Zalmhaven I is the highest residential and office tower in Benelux.

The client wanted to put a finishing touch on the iconic new building using modern and sustainable LED lighting. Yet illuminating the entire façade was not an option since the building’s 58 floors are primarily occupied by luxury residences.

Nick Dankers of Livingprojects created an intelligent, end-to-end Color Kinetics lighting solution that illuminates the top two floors of the building which house a high-end restaurant, building systems, and an 8 m (26 ft) tall pole located on the tower.

The building’s proximity to the airport and environmental considerations prohibited light pollution - and there was limited roof space to locate fixtures. To address these challenges, 90 Color Kinetics ColorGraze MX4 Powercore, RGBW, 914 mm (3 ft) fixtures were selected to graze all four sides the two structural blocks at the top of the building. The luminaires are mounted 914 mm (3 ft) apart on a custom-designed roof mount. Color Kinetics Blast Powercore, RGBW fixtures (8) were used to light the pole.

Color Kinetics iPlayer 3 delivers dynamic, full-color light shows and Color Kinetics Data Enabler Pro provides integrated data and power to the fully connected installation.

Completed in Q1, 2022, the project team braved fear of heights, fog, and rain to deliver a stunning lighting solution that highlights the skyline of Rotterdam.
