A two Michelin-starred restaurant creates its atmosphere through precision architectural lighting

Nestled within the iconic BMW Welt complex in Munich, Bavaria, THE CLOUD by Käfer is more than a restaurant, it is a fully considered sensory experience. The two Michelin-starred venue, led by chef Jens Madsen, centers around a concept of Culinary Nomadism, drawing on the flavors and traditions of South East Germany and Africa, weaving them together with high-quality local Bavarian produce. With only 42 seats, the experience is intentionally intimate and exclusive. When the space was renovated, lighting wasn't an afterthought, it was foundational. The right light sets the tone before a single dish arrives, shaping how guests feel, what they notice, and how they experience the space around them.

The lighting had to feel fluid, atmospheric, and purposeful, never distracting, always enhancing. Developed in collaboration with BMW, and specialized design and technical teams, the installation blends BMW's precise, reduced design language with organic materials and artistic elements, elevating the environment without overpowering it.

Two Color Kinetics solutions were selected to deliver this effect. In the corner seating area, a 3.6 x 3.6m (11.81 x 11.81ft) wall of Luminous Textile gen2 luminaires were installed behind a curved wood panel wall, allowing light to peek through softly and create a warm, ambient glow. At the bar, PureStyle IntelliHue Powercore luminaires backlight the full shelving display where the restaurant's premium bottle selection is housed. The luminaires produce a homogenous, even output that puts the collection beautifully on show and are controlled via a Data Enabler Pro gen3. Color Kinetics was selected for the scale and special-solution nature of the Luminous Textile installation and PureStyle's signature homogenous output, essential for the bar display.

The result is a space where light plays a quiet but essential role. The soft glow of the corner seating and the clean bar backlighting contribute to an atmosphere that feels considered and refined, fitting for a restaurant that has earned two Michelin stars in its first year. At THE CLOUD by Käfer, design, cuisine, and light come together as one seamless statement.
