The Signify Electronics factory in Tijuana, Baja California, has long been a cornerstone of the company’s global manufacturing network. As the largest site for producing drivers and ballasts, it plays a pivotal role in supporting Signify’s operations across more than 70 countries. With Tijuana’s vibrant culture and dynamic growth, the factory's façade became an opportunity to create something that not only reflects the company’s innovation but also celebrates the community it serves. This architectural lighting installation, powered by Color Kinetics, has turned the factory into a luminous symbol, drawing both employees and citizens together in awe and connection.
The lighting design aimed to transform the factory’s expansive glass façade into an interactive canvas that reflects Tijuana’s energy and spirit. The vision was to create a visual experience that would resonate with the local community. The dynamic lighting system would serve as a means of communication, allowing the factory to engage with its surroundings, changing with the seasons, festivities, and the heartbeat of the city.
The installation features 54 Flex Compact strings, 66 Vaya Linear luminaires, and 7 ColorReach Compact RGB fixtures (now specified with ReachElite). These products were carefully integrated into the factory’s architecture to highlight the 6 m (20 ft) tall, curved glass panels and the walls that display the Signify logo. The advanced pixel-mapping capabilities of the iPlayer 3 Controller allow for infinite possibilities for communication through lighting. Color Kinetics luminaires provided flexibility to generate a variety of compelling content, with the ability to easily update and customize lighting displays.
Color Kinetics products were chosen for their superior technical capabilities and their outstanding support and reliability. The design and specification team at Signify, in partnership with LED Proyecta, chose Color Kinetics’ lighting systems to deliver the high performance needed for such a complex and large-scale installation.
Ricardo Gutierrez, Product Engineering Manager at Signify Electronics Tijuana says, “for me, it has been exciting to be part of this project, I feel that every night invested was worth it. Employees and citizens bring their families in the evenings to see the façade show, and even ask us if we’re having a party every day.”
