Gateway WA is a prestigious project implemented to improve the safety and efficiency of the road network accessing Perth Airport and the surrounding industrial areas. An innovative urban design including the 'Sky Ribbon' art piece by artist Rick Vermey which includes three bridge structures at the highway interchange. The challenge was to showcase Sky Ribbon for travelers and commuters at night, which called for a dynamic lighting system.
To highlight the detail of the 220 aluminium etched panels of Gateway WA, a dynamic Color Kinetics LED lighting system was selected, consisting of ColorGraze MX4 Powercore grazing luminaires. The artist used the luminaires to enhance the textured patterns on both sides of the shields, with color-changing effects making for a spectacular view.
The Color Kinetics lighting system can be programmed for customized dynamic color changing settings to reflect holidays, causes, and events like the victories of the local sports teams.
"From the outset, we wanted to create something that was unique to the state and to the country—to express the dynamic, creative and rapidly evolving character of Western Australia" said Ilario Spagnolo, Main Roads Project Director on the Gateway WA Project. "From its cutting-edge engineering to striking design, Sky Ribbon stands out in Perth's night sky and has become an iconic part of the entrance into Perth for both visitors and locals alike".
