Historic shipyard illuminated in dynamic color

At the western tip of Croatia is mild-weathered Pula, known for its shipbuilding industry and tourist spots. The bustling city and its 158-year-old Uljanik Shipyard were in need of scenic makeovers to impress the sightseers. Color Kinetics illuminated the shipyard’s cranes to transform the area into a striking nighttime landscape.

Color Kinetics partnered with lighting designer Dean Skira of Lumenart Ltd. to create visual appeal for the city. Because of their long and useful lifetimes, LED luminaires are used, saving the shipyard electricians the time and labor required to frequently service luminaires that are difficult to access. LED lights can be programmed to emit dynamic color effects, which is perfect for the project.

"Revitalization of the seafront, partly by realization of the cranes project, is an important strategic objective for the town of Pula, which is also well known for its shipyard Uljanik, founded in 1856," said Skira. "After the completion of the project, [the] town of Pula will shine in new light and bring new perspectives to habitants."

Color Kinetics ColorReach Powercore LED floodlights are installed around each of the eight cranes to fully illuminate them. The four large cranes are illuminated by 48 ColorReach Powercore luminaires and the four small cranes are illuminated by 28, for a total of 76 luminaires (now specified with ReachElite).

An iPlayer 3 DMX lighting controller manages the lighting effects that gleam across the exteriors of the enormous cranes. The project was completed in May 2014, in time for the summer tourist season.

Thanks to the lighting team, crowds are attracted to the cranes that engrave color on the sky and brighten the shadowy area. The thriving city now has an unforgettable landscape etched in energy-efficient and dynamic light.
