Television studio relies on cool-running LEDs

Headquartered in Garden Grove, California, the Saigon Entertainment Television studio recently enjoyed a complete lighting makeover. Lighting the television studio, which is located in a converted commercial warehouse, posed challenges for the design team. They could not use conventional lighting fixtures because they generate too much heat, and air conditioning cannot be used during taping because of the noise. The designers settled on LED luminaires because they produce a cool beam of light while consuming less energy than comparable conventional fixtures.

A system of iW Blast TR and iW Blast Powercore luminaires (now specified with ColoBlast IntelliHue Powercore), tunable white-light LED wash lights from Color Kinetics, provides an affordable solution. The show’s producers can dial in the exact shade of white they require while avoiding hard shadows on the news anchors.

Low-profile iColor Cove QLX full-color LED cove luminaires (now specified as PureStyle Compact Powercore, IntelliHue) are installed along the edge of the news desk to lessen under-chin shadows, refine close-ups, and provide colorful scenery lighting. ColorBlast TR luminaires backlight the vacuformed set pieces, while eW Blast Powercore luminaires backlight the translight behind the news set.
