Federation Square is a plaza in Melbourne, Australia’s cultural and civic hub along the Yarra River. The space is significant to Aboriginal heritage, specifically the Wurundjeri and Bunurong peoples, and home to Melbourne’s Arts Precinct. Federation Square represents a public place for creative expression and an area of cultural significance to First Peoples. Today, the square is filled with art galleries and exhibitions, a diverse range of food and drink options, and various events that capture the heart of Melbourne year after year.
To raise the profile of the space and highlight the iconic architecture, Fed Square / MAP Co opted for a lighting upgrade from Color Kinetics in 2022 as part of a $20 million investment by the Victorian Government in Capital Works.
The new lighting aimed to enhance its night-time experience, support cultural and economic activity, and improve safety perceptions via inclusive, programmable lighting of the Square’s geometric architecture.
The installation features Color Kinetics Burst Powercore gen 3, RGBW luminaires and iColor Accent Compact, RGBW luminaires. The luminaires are mounted on the façade’s three-dimensional, geometric features contributing to the dynamic façade lighting and event adaptability. The installation is controlled by Pharos.
Color Kinetics products were selected for this project because they provide dynamic, programmable, high-quality illumination that adapts to different events and architectural features. The luminaires create memorable experiences at this iconic Melbourne city building.
The result is a flexible lighting solution that brings Federation Square’s unique architecture to life after dark, supporting events, improving visibility, and reinforcing its place as a dynamic cultural destination in the heart of Melbourne.
