Riley Hospital For Children
Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
For over 75 years, Riley Hospital for Children has set the standard of excellence for pediatric medical care in Indiana. As the hospital enters the digital age, it is now setting a new standard in hospital design with a major expansion/renovation project to enhance the care of its patients by creating a more welcoming and comforting environment. The design created by Designplan, Inc. was inspired from the Arts and Crafts style with a high-tech addition of Color Kinetics intelligent illumination technology. Patients of all ages - and their parents too - are awestruck at what they see when strolling the corridors of three of the hospital's renovated units: a curvy ceiling alcove full of rich colored light and color changing effects. Designplan knew they wanted to incorporate the fun, childlike feel of color, but high-maintenance, noisy methods such as neon and cold-cathode proved inappropriate for a 24-hour hospital environment, not to mention the limited color capabilities. The answer: Color Kinetics LED-based intelligent illumination technology. Nearly 150-feet of Color KineticsŪ iColorŪ Cove fixtures are installed in S-shaped alcoves winding down the hospital's corridors. The fixtures are easily controlled via a Color Kinetics Multi Synchronizer installed near the nurses' station so that beautiful colored light and fun color changing effects are created at the push of a button. Each button instantaneously displays pre-set light shows designed to create a range of moods, from cheery sunlight to soothing twilight. The design has proven so successful, it is currently being installed in additional units throughout the hospital.
