Ponca City Memorial Fountain

Ponca City, Oklahoma, USA

The Ponca City Memorial Fountain has long been a community focal point, engaging residents and visitors since its construction in 1925. Originally commissioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution, the fountain was recently renovated to regain its distinction as the highlight of Ponca City’s Centennial Plaza. Color Kinetics’ intelligent LED illumination proved to be the ideal solution for giving the fountain new life.

When the fountain was last renovated in 1980, the lighting scheme called for 250-watt incandescent fixtures with red, green and blue lenses to create colored effects. This resulted in a maintenance challenge and little ability to actually control the illumination. Over the 20 years since, the traditional lighting system fell into disrepair.

In place of the old, high-maintenance system, the modernized fountain makes use of advanced LED technology and intelligent control to generate light shows that sync with the water sprays and produce choreographed, color-changing effects. To achieve this extraordinary display, 24 C-Splash 2 systems were installed inside the fountain to uplight the water as it forms shape-shifting patterns in the air. In addition to the eye-pleasing aesthetics, C-Splash 2 proved highly efficient by minimizing the fountain’s maintenance requirements and reducing the approximately 8,000 watts consumed by the previous lighting system to less than 600 watts total consumed by the new LED-based system.

The fountain’s lighting effects were programmed and controlled with a combination of Color Kinetics’ ColorPlay® authoring software and iPlayer® 2, which can trigger up to eight programmed light shows. The Controller Keypad provides a simple interface to change the light show at any time.

C-Splash 2 is a submersible, LED-based system that provides vibrant color and lighting effects for use in or near fresh and saltwater locations up to 15 feet deep. Whether installed in or out of water, C-Splash 2 allows freedom in design for water-based applications that integrate color and light for both subtle and dramatic visual effect – from colored accents in landscaping design, to theatrical color-changing fountains, to grand-scale theme park installations. The rugged system features unified power and data cable to minimize wiring, and can withstand water treated with bromine and chlorine.
