Lucky's Lounge At Mohegan Sun
Uncasville, Connecticut, USA
Las Vegas meets New England at Lucky’s Lounge, a hip and popular nightspot at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. A great deal of planning went into this recreation of vintage Vegas style – from the geometric shapes and leather finishes, to the dramatic, colored lighting scheme – enabled by Color Kinetics’ LED illumination technology.
Designer Mark Ottmann worked closely with owner Patrick Lyons to capture the lounge feel of 1960s Las Vegas. They researched architectural designs from that period to conceptualize the space’s interior, whose kidney shape is echoed by the central bar and the hand-crafted, plaster soffit above it. To light the sensual space they originally considered neon, but, according to Ottmann, “We just couldn’t achieve the rich reds and deep blues we were looking for. “
The alternative? Nearly 90 linear feet of iColor Cove was installed to create a dramatic halo effect around the soffit, generating saturated color and precisely designed lighting effects. Eight different light sequences were authored using ColorPlay software and the iPlayer storage device. As a result, the space’s ambience can change with the simple push of a button. This high degree of control was another major advantage over neon sources. Collectively, the iColor Cove units produce seamless runs of color that range from gradual rainbow chases, to vibrant Vegas red, to a surreal gray tone that colors the space like a vintage black and white photograph. The lighting is also used to accent the small stage area according to musical acts. While patrons of Lucky’s are transported back to classic Vegas via 10-ounce martinis and nostalgic décor, the high-tech LED lighting is pure 21st century.
