Harrods Millenium

Color Kinetics LED lighting transforms the Harrods White Perfumery room into a sparkling "Millennium Winter Wonderland" gleaming with frosty color. Exquisite fairies are bathed in subtly changing colors as they float among tree branches held by illuminated urns, while the architectural cove in the center of the ceiling is dramatically transformed into a stunning color-changing frame for the entire scene.

In addition, Color Kinetics LED lights eliminate many of the drawbacks of conventional gel and filter-based methods of colored lighting. They're small, quiet, they generate almost no heat or UV emissions, and offer an ultra-long source life. No moving parts means that there are no motors to wear out or break down---they're virtually maintenance free. One of the more dramatic transformations made possible by Color Kinetics lighting is the architectural cove in the center of the White Perfumery ceiling. As lit normally with white recessed and fluorescent tube lighting, this cove adds a subtle elegance to the all-white space. With this particular project, however, the Harrods' Artistic Design Team brought the impact of this cove to new heights using 150 feet of Color Kinetics® iColor® Cove lighting to turn the cove into a stunning color-changing "frame" for the entire Winter Wonderland scheme. Complementing the cove lighting are Color Kinetics C-200 fixtures uplighting the fairies and glowing from within the translucent urns.

The overall effect in the White Perfumery is magical; a sophisticated storybook scene come to life to the delight of Harrods' Artistic Design Team and, of course, to the throngs of Harrods' holiday shoppers. And at the heart of these "how-do-they-do-that" colors and effects is Chromacore. This exclusive technology, which is inherent in all Color Kinetics lights, uses a microprocessor to control the mixing of red, green and blue LEDs to generate up to 16.7 million colors and produce dynamic lighting effects such as color washes, cross fades and chasing rainbows which can be varied by speed, brightness, saturation and direction. The lights can be controlled via switches in stand-alone operation, or externally controlled via DMX512, a PC, or Color Kinetics own line of easy-to-use controllers.

For this project, Color Kinetics once again worked with the retail lighting specialists of LT Projects in London, a Color Kinetics Authorized Master Distributor, as they did to light Harrods' colorful "Take Time Out" summer window scheme earlier this year.

As the Artistic Design Team at Harrods has discovered, Color Kinetics lighting enables designers and other creative professionals to use light and color in ways never before possible, setting a new standard for functionality while re-defining the frontiers of using lighting design in retail visual displays. It's an elegant and simple tool that offers inexhaustible palette of design possibilities, providing retailers like Harrods with the gorgeous visual "happily ever after" they've been seeking.
