Evergreen Hospital Medical Center

Kirkland, Washington, USA

Since opening its doors in 1972, Evergreen Hospital Medical Center applies a patient and family-centered philosophy to provide unsurpassed, whole care for more than 400,000 residents throughout north King and south Snohomish counties in Washington State. In keeping with the hospital's commitment to advancing medical solutions and modern amenities, a new Surgery and Physicians Center was recently constructed to house various programs and physician offices. Connecting this new center to the hospital's east wing provided an opportunity for some aesthetic, colored lighting effects, powered by Color Kinetics® intelligent LED illumination.

The decorative lighting concept was designed to add color and movement to the long, windowless tunnel connecting the two areas. Five cabinets measuring 7' high by 8' wide by 3'deep were designed to line the curving tunnel's walls, providing access to concealed Color Kinetics LED illumination systems via decorative, perforated metal doors. According to designer Stephanie Conway of Sparling Engineering, Color Kinetics ColorBlast® and C-200 Security systems were chosen to achieve a kinetic design with vivid, saturated color. The systems also met the hospital's requirements for minimum maintenance concerns and maximum flexibility in creating the desired visual effects.

Using Color Kinetics ColorPlay® authoring software, a light show was programmed to display a diagonal of changing colored light against an illuminated backdrop of an alternating color. The effects and colors are easily controlled using iPlayer 2 and can be changed in accordance with special events throughout the year. The result? The light at the end of the tunnel is now preceded by the colorful light inside it!
