Duvet

New York, NewYork, USA

Swanky nightclubs are nothing new to Manhattan, but Duvet isn’t your typical, swanky nightclub. Launched with a celebrity-studded opening in December 2004, the posh space boasts ethereal, color changing effects throughout, courtesy of Color Kinetics’ intelligent LED lighting technology.

Duvet takes the term “lounge” seriously, with 23 oversized beds in addition to private rooms and banquette seating. Color Kinetics’ LED-based lighting systems unify the luxurious interior, from the entryway, to the elaborate glass bars, to the bathrooms, to the beds themselves!

The lighting scheme, designed, programmed and installed by Dougie Lazer of XS Lighting & Sound, Inc., called for a variety of Color Kinetics products, including roughly 840 feet (256 meters) of iColor Cove® applied in several spaces – encased in the glass bars, uplighting and downlighting the beds, and mounted in the walls and beneath glass steps that lead to the lower level. Approximately 75 ColorBlast® 12 and ColorBlast 6 units up-light the venue’s ceiling throughout, and also shine down on a unique, 15-foot (4.6-meter) jellyfish tank. According to Lazer, “When the lights change color, the jellyfish themselves appear to change color, while the water seems to remain clear. It’s a stunning effect that’s truly mesmerizing.”

Elsewhere in the venue, more than 60 iColor® MR lamps generate scattered bursts of color. Because they’re designed to retrofit standard MR16 fixtures and sockets, they were easily mounted in a number of places: beneath glass in the entryway, inside the dining tables, and adding unexpected flair to the bathroom and wine cellar. The lamps were an ideal choice for the latter location, where their low heat emission is vital to the storage of fine wines.

Lazer cites a number of other reasons for choosing Color Kinetics. “The lights are fully enclosed in several areas, for example, inside very expensive glass bars, so their long source life and low maintenance requirements are critical,” he says. “The club uses a tremendous number of lights, and since Color Kinetics’ LED-based lights are low power, it’s not running exorbitantly high voltage and generating a lot of heat.”

The entire Color Kinetics lighting system is controlled by Light System Manager – Color Kinetics’ Ethernet-based show authoring and control system. This simplified the process of discovering and addressing such a high quantity of lights, and allowed for the programming of precisely designed effects, including elegant color sweeps that subtly alter the mood of the individual rooms.

There may be plenty of dreaming at this continually morphing and colorful nightspot, but there’s certainly no sleeping.
