Modern home theaters are increasingly being designed with state-of-the-art “bells and whistles” that rival those of commercial entertainment venues. In fact, some of these residential high-tech environments take the design a step further. Color Kinetics’ intelligent LED lighting technology finds many applications in contemporary home theater design – enabling highly customizable color and dynamic effects that create moods, synchronize with other media, and enhance the overall quality of entertainment.

Las Vegas-based Creative Home Theatre specializes in custom home theater design, including distributed audio and video, climate control and, of course, lighting. In addition to integrating Color Kinetics’ systems within projects for its clients, Creative Home Theatre’s own showroom features an extraordinary application comprising 175 feet of iColor® Cove – an LED lighting linear system that’s ideal for generating color and color-changing effects in alcoves and accent spaces. The compact, low-profile systems run along the demo theater’s perimeter and within an ellipse in the ceiling, where one ColorBurst® 6 spotlight lends an additional punch of saturated color. Collectively the systems produce a variety of effects and colors that wash from the center of the room to the perimeter – including a dramatic light show that synchronizes with music.

According to Creative Home Theatre specialist Greg Margolis, “The Color Kinetics lighting allows us to set dramatic scenes using color for a very pronounced effect. Theatrical industry lighting fixtures are typically large and complex, but these LED lighting systems let us bring theatrical lighting to homes with more capabilities. We can create dramatic scenes for before and after the movie, and subtle background lighting during the feature that doesn't detract or distract the viewer during the presentation.”

Creative Home Theatre’s installation is controlled by a combination of ColorPlay® authoring software and the iPlayer® 2 storage/playback device, with is triggered by the showroom’s existing DMX control system.
