Carnival Valor

Carnival Valor features colorful décor that supports its uplifting “Heroes and Heroics” Central Idea. As such, architect Joe Farcus applied Color Kinetics’ intelligent LED lighting throughout seven zones of the ship, principally in vibrant shades of red, white and blue.

For example, the Atrium ceiling was lit by 600 units of iColor Cove® 12” and iColor Cove 6” – sleek, linear fixtures that bring color and dynamic effects to alcoves and other tight spaces. The units were programmed to display red, white and blue in varying sequences, including a simulation of the American flag. One particular light show presents a medley of all the programmed effects, culminating in a surprising, multi-color spiral that delights guests. Also lit by runs of iColor Cove, the 328 foot (100 m) Promenade shines in red, white and blue with a series of different effects, for example, fast-paced color sweeps running from one end of the walkway to the other.

The One Small Step disco was designed as a homage to man’s first walk on the moon. To give the impression that the ceiling is adorned with “shooting stars,” the design team installed 32 strands of iColor® Flex SL, each comprising 50 individually controlled LED nodes. In addition, more than 50 ColorBurst® 4 units were used to illuminate the “moon craters” and make them come to life with changing colors.

These dynamic effects were authored and controlled by Light System Manager, Color Kinetics’ Ethernet-based control system that facilitates the creation and management of complex and large-scale light shows. It provides a simple graphical user interface to minimize the time and guesswork involved in designing intricate lighting effects, including the ability to easily discover and address many nodes or lights in a network.
