Planet Burrito

Dallas, Texas, USA

Lately being “green” is not just for Kermit the Frog, as everyone is trying to become more environmentally friendly. Dallas eatery Planet Burrito is doing its part by incorporating energy-efficient LED lighting by Color Kinetics.

A new progressive restaurant chain, Planet Burrito enlisted the help of lighting designer Misty Wiebold of M Group to implement energy-efficient, colorful lighting to correspond with its existing colorful setting. Intelligent LED lighting provided the perfect solution – offering millions of programmable colors and color-changing effects while consuming very little energy as compared to most conventional sources.

To generate an exciting and fresh vibe, uniquely-designed resin clouds were hung from the ceiling. TwentyColorCast® 14 fixtures were installed behind the translucent resin clouds to saturate them with color. Designed by artist Brad Oldham of Studio 3, the illuminated clouds display a variety of light shows including a chasing rainbow effect. The design is complemented by resin blocks within the countertops that are illuminated by iColor® MR g2 – an intelligent color-changing lamp designed to fit most standard MR16 fixtures. Both the ColorCast 14 and iColor MR g2 units are controlled by Color Kinetics’ ColorDial controller, which easily triggers pre-programmed lighting effects the simple push and turn of a knob.

In addition to the color lighting applications, Wiebold chose Color Kinetics iW™ MR, a simple white LED-based lamp, for all of the track and spot fixtures. The lamp’s long source life and low energy consumption perfectly suited the project’s green design.

The end result is a win-win situation for Planet Burrito, where visitors can be enticed by the cool, colorful vibe, and the owners are happy knowing they are doing their part to help the environment. And it is easy being green!
