Da Nang, one of Vietnam's largest cities, is located on the South Central Coast of Vietnam, situated off the coast of the South China Sea. Its easily accessible port and location near a major highway and the North-South Railway makes Da Nang a major transportation hub as well as the commercial and educational center of Vietnam. Many tourists flock to Da Nang to visit its beaches and several nearby Vietnamese national landmarks and historic sites. As part of an effort to attract more tourists to the Da Nang, the government added several must-see landmarks to the city, including the iconic Dragon Bridge and the newly constructed Da Nang Administrative Center.
The Administrative Center, located in the center of Da Nang, was constructed as part of a countrywide effort to consolidate municipal agencies. The Vietnamese government constructed attractive buildings in each of Vietnam's major cities for the purpose, including the Administrative Center, which houses Da Nang's government offices.
Lines sweeping down the length of the glass 34-story building accentuate its unique architectural shape. Building owners envisioned the building as a beacon shining at the center of the seaside city after dark. Its design was inspired by the shape of a light house, and its four-story base is meant to resemble a ship sailing out to sea, symbolizing the recent urbanization of this dynamic and youthful city. They wanted a durable and cost-effective lighting solution for the façade of the Administrative Center that would highlight its architecture and design, while matching the existing lighting on the city's landmarks and bridges.
Philips Color Kinetics partnered with the Philips Vietnam, to devise a color-changing, programmable LED lighting design for the Administrative Center. Over 270 individual Philips Color Kinetics ArchiPoint iColor Powercore fixtures with translucent dome lenses were mounted on the frame of the building, following the lines sweeping down the façade. The fixtures are positioned 10.8 ft (3.3 m) apart vertically, and the lines are spaced about 30 ft (9 m) horizontally.
In addition, 24 ColorReach Powercore gen2 fixtures were installed around the circumference of the canopy-like dome, and 16 ColorGraze Powercore fixtures were mounted to the top of the dome, accentuating the pattern of the glass at the top of the building and making it appear to glow from within. Over 120 Vaya Linear and 17 iW Graze Powercore fixtures were used as well.
Many landmarks around the city, such as the Dragon Bridge and the Thuan Phuoc Bridge, are illuminated with dynamic LED lighting solutions from Philips Color Kinetics. The Administrative Center stands out in the Da Nang night sky while matching the existing lighting in the area.
