Lighting Design:
Scott Ferriero of Lucia Lighting & Design
Q: How are you inspired by working with light?
A: For me, the inspiration from working with light comes from taking a design, whether it be lighting, architectural, or interior, and enhancing their creations by painting with light, as they say. Inspiration also comes along when you work with clients that truly embrace new and green technologies, which LED lighting is a critical component, as well as understand how important lighting is in the overall scheme of design.
Q: What was your original design concept for this project?
A: During the planning of the lighting for Rustic Kitchen, I was tasked to create a warm, inviting atmosphere through the use of unique and unusual light fixtures, and incorporate newer, efficient technologies. Two spaces posed a particular challenge. The first space – a function area -- required the ability to change the atmosphere to adapt the room to different uses. The second space -- a studio kitchen where cooking shows are taped for distribution – required the ability to adapt the lighting, including the color quality of the light, for shooting.
Q: How did LED technology help you achieve this vision?
A: I was able to achieve the lighting goals for this project with the use of Color Kinetics iW™ Cove Powercore LED fixtures. Their ability to change color temperature from “warm” white to “cool” white offered tremendous flexibility in the general lighting of the spaces.

Q: What is the most essential element of exemplary lighting design?
A: The most essential element in lighting design is to light in layers, and to have control of those layers.
Q: What role will LEDs play in the future of lighting?
A: It has a major role in the future of light. I see adoption increasing as the technology improves and as the lumen output increases, which I think is in the very near future. The industry standard formulation for the total cost of light consists of several different factors, including energy cost, power consumption, labor cost, lifetime and light output. As the total cost of light diminishes, it will put LEDs in the forefront as the lighting fixture of choice, proving that LED technology is here to stay and will play a substantial part in our lighting future.
