Sustainable lighting comes to low impact offices

The Co-operative Group, a consumer cooperative with a range of businesses, opened its new 16-story headquarters in Manchester, England, in March 2013. The building is a BREEAM-rated Outstanding structure, and is one of the world's most environmentally friendly office spaces. The building's owners also desired for the building's contemporary architectural design to be complemented with sustainable illumination in order to reduce its environmental footprint. Lighting design firm Buro Happold worked with local manufacturer representative Architainment to transform the structure with an LED solution for dynamic interior and exterior lighting.

Buro Happold chose ColorGraze QLX Powercore (now specified with Graze Compact Powercore, Intellihue), ColorBlast Powercore, and custom white ColorBlast luminaires to enhance the overall building scheme with both white and color light. Daylight sensors operate in conjunction with natural light, triggering the luminaires to only emit as much light as necessary, increasing energy savings and sustainability. The dynamic atrium roof uses color-changing technology to highlight the contemporary architecture.

The creative combination of sustainability and modernization establishes One Angel Square as a benchmark for future commercial office design.
