LEED - a snapshot view

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to encourage sustainable building practices through a voluntary, consensus-based rating system. Buildings may become LEED-certified at various levels of excellence by accumulating points in five key areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Points required for certification Certified Silver Gold Platinum
LEED New Construction 26 - 32 33 - 38 39 - 51 52 - 69
LEED Commercial Interiors 21 - 26 27 - 31 32 - 41 42 - 57

The following table lists potential points that may be accumulated in relation to lighting today*.

LEED Credit New Construction Version 2.2 Commercial Interiors Version 2.0
Minimum Energy Requirement   ASHRAE 90.1-2004   ASHRAE 90.1-2004
Controls 1-10 Reduce total energy consumption 10.5 - 42% (modeled) 1 - 3 Reduce lighting power density 15 - 35%
Light pollution 1 Provide individually controllable lighting to 90% of occupants and shared spaces   ASHRAE 90.1-2004
Enhanced metering     2 Lighting systems and controls (and all other systems)
Daylight controls     1 Daylight-responsive controls within 15' of windows and under skylights
Enhanced commissioning   Commissioning Authority and integrated manual 1 Commissioning Authority and integrated manual

*Subject to change pending new standards in 2009

The LED Benefit: The inherently efficient nature of LED lights makes them an ideal choice for accumulating LEED points attributed to lowering energy consumption. As digital devices, they integrate seamlessly with control systems, allowing building owners to provide individually controllable lighting and control the impact of interior LED lighting. Their directional output helps to curb light trespass.
