COLOR KINETICS DEMONSTRATES LED-BASED INTELLIGENT WHITE LIGHT PROTOTYPES AT LIGHTFAIR 2002

Industry Pioneer Continues to Drive Development of LED-based White Light;
Narrows the Gap Between LED Illumination and the General Illumination Market

SAN FRANCISCO - LIGHTFAIR INTERNATIONAL 2002 - June 3, 2002 - In a development that brings LEDs significantly closer to the "holy grail" of high-quality white light for general illumination applications, Color Kinetics Incorporated, the leader in intelligent LED illumination technologies, is exhibiting prototypes of its LED-based white light technology at Lightfair 2002. The company expects to bring a fully controllable white light product to market, possibly working with one or more partners.

Last year, Color Kinetics achieved a major breakthrough with an LED-based white light technology that produces high quality white light which can be intelligently controlled over a range of color temperatures from warm to cool shades of light. This patent-pending technology couples advances in white LEDs with Color Kinetics' patented Chromacore® technology, achieving an LED-based high-quality white light solution for the general illumination market.

Recognized by design professionals and industry experts alike as a revolutionary invention-both technically and aesthetically-Chromacore uses microprocessor-controlled multiple LEDs to generate millions of colors and a variety of dynamic lighting effects. In addition to its Chromacore patents, Color Kinetics holds several intellectual property filings covering the use of multiple LEDs to generate fully controllable white light. Color Kinetics' is referring to these technologies as "intelligent white light."

Over the last few years, researchers and analysts have anointed LEDs as the "holy grail" of the illumination industry, citing their ruggedness, ultra-long source life, energy efficiency, low heat generation and lack of damaging ultra-violet emissions as the keys to completely replacing the conventional incandescent, fluorescent and halogen light sources we use today. While it is true that LEDs offer benefits that transcend many of the challenges of traditional light sources, until recently, LEDs have been limited in their ability to produce pure white light. Over the last year, however, vast improvements in intensity, cost and stability have been seen, enabling LEDs to meet the requirements of general illumination sources.

"LED manufacturers have made significant progress in solving the technical issues surrounding the use of white LEDs for general illumination applications. As LED technology has improved, Color Kinetics has been able to make great strides in our own intelligent white light developments," said George Mueller, Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Color Kinetics. "We're thrilled to be driving this industry initiative and first to market with intelligent white light prototypes and especially excited to be exhibiting these prototypes in front of the Lightfair audience."

Color Kinetics' intelligent white light technology leverages the advanced control capabilities of Chromacore to give users an entirely new level of flexibility with white light. It is unique in that it can produce a high color rendering index (CRI), resulting in high-quality light across the entire spectrum of white. For example, users would have the ability to select any shade (color temperature) of white light they desire, whether it is cooler tones that make the most of certain retail displays, or warmer tones for more comfortable home lighting. What's more, intelligent white light could be programmed for a variety of effects, including gradually changing shades of white over time (ideal for day into evening lighting) or turning on and off based on the sensing of motion (a great energy saver for corporate or public space applications).

Now in its fifth year of operation, Color Kinetics celebrates its fifth appearance at Lightfair International with five major announcements dubbed the "High 5." In addition to the announcement of exciting developments in the intelligent white light space, other High 5 announcements include significant across-the-board price reductions on all Color Kinetics illumination products, five new color changing products that expand the range of Color Kinetics intelligent LED fixtures, a new line of single color LED fixtures making Color Kinetics a one stop shop for all LED fixture needs, and the adoption of Chromacore technologies in five new industries.
