"COLORFUL" LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS
NAMED P.O.V. MAGAZINE "UP & COMERS" FOR 1999

BOSTON — September 21, 1999 — George Mueller and Dr. Ihor Lys, the co-founders of Boston-based Color Kinetics Incorporated, have been named two of the Top 50 Up & Comers for 1999 by POV Magazine. The list features entrepreneurs under the age of 35 who, in the words of POV editors, are on track to "become the household names of the new century." Noted for developing Chromacore™, a digital color-changing lighting technology that represents the biggest breakthrough in lighting since the Edison bulb, Mueller and Lys appear in POV's October 1999 issue which hits newsstands this week.

Mueller and Lys founded Color Kinetics, the pioneer of full-spectrum digital lighting, in 1997. The company designs, manufactures and markets digital lighting products ideally suited for use in visual merchandising, display, signage, architectural, entertainment and theatrical lighting environments. Color Kinetics' patent-pending Chromacore technology uses a microprocessor to control the mixing of red, green and blue LEDs (light emitting diodes) to generate up to 16.7 million colors and an array of dynamic color-changing effects. Unlike traditional gel- or filter-colored lighting options which are hot, noisy and high-maintenance, Color Kinetics digital lights generate very little heat and no UV, contain no moving parts and offer an ultra-long source life of 100,000 hours.

While much of the company's start-up money came from Mueller's credit card, Color Kinetics has since received two rounds of VC funding and is currently pursuing a third. In just under two years, the company has grown from two to 35-plus people, with a huge following in the retail, entertainment, architecture and design worlds. Company headcount has grown over 100% in the last year alone, and Color Kinetics expects to increase that by another 50% by the end of 1999.

Still a relative newcomer, Color Kinetics and its full line of digital color-changing lights have earned a clean sweep of top industry awards and continue to impress those in the lighting and design worlds. Color Kinetics customer list is a veritable "Who's Who" of the retail and entertainment industries, with current customers including Disney, Sony Loews, Nine West, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Limited Too, Brookstone and Boston Symphony Hall. With a host of new projects and new products taking shape, Color Kinetics — led by Mueller and Lys — promises to keep Boston on the map as the city that brought lighting and color into the digital age.
