KINETICS AWARDED U.S. PATENT FOR CHROMACORE
Company's Core Technology for LED-based Color-Changing Lighting
Sets the Standard for the Digital Revolution
BOSTON
January 25, 2000 Color Kinetics Incorporated, the
pioneer of full spectrum digital lighting, today announces the awarding
of a U.S. Patent, which is the first issued patent in its field,
for its exclusive Chromacore technology. The patent, #6,016,038,
covers Stand Alone and network control of multiple LEDs (light emitting
diodes) for illumination and display. Chromacore uses microprocessor-controlled
multi-colored LEDs to generate over 16.7 million colors and a variety
of color-changing lighting effects.
In contrast to conventional lighting techniques, which require gels,
dimmers and moving parts to produce color and colored lighting effects,
Chromacore generates colored light by using a microprocessor and
additive color mixing. In addition, Chromacore technology offers
an ultra-long source life of 100,000 hours. It uses little power,
produces virtually no heat or UV emissions, and creates dynamic
changing color without moving parts, all of which significantly
extends the range of environments in which colored lighting effects
can be used. Powered by Chromacore, Color Kinetics' line of digital
color-changing lighting products are today in use by a veritable
"Who's Who" of the retail, design and entertainment industries,
including Disney, Sony Loews, Limited Too, Brookstone, Nine West,
Saks Fifth Avenue and Harrods, to name just a few.
Chromacore is an integral part of Color Kinetics' growing intellectual
property portfolio, which includes U.S. and international filings
encompassing a number of emerging digital technologies. In related
news today, Color Kinetics announced that it has completed a $13-plus
million round of financing that, in addition to strengthening its
leadership in the full spectrum digital lighting space, will enable
Color Kinetics to expand its intellectual property research and
actively extend its digital technologies into new markets. (see
press release dated 1/25/00, "Color Kinetics Closes Third Round
of Financing")
"Our
patent is a major milestone for Color Kinetics, capping over two
years of industry recognition for Chromacore and the virtually unlimited
applications it enables," said George Mueller, President and CEO.
Mueller sees a wide range of applications for Color Kinetics technology,
"beyond even the ways that our customers use it today," he said.
"The inherent benefits of Chromacore make it possible to incorporate
color and light into so many other intelligent technologies, which
is what makes this patent significant not just for Color Kinetics,
but for the digital market space as a whole," stated Mueller. "We
are thrilled to have Chromacore officially acknowledged as a revolutionary
innovation and as an technology that Color Kinetics has conceptualized,
developed and brought to market, and we look forward to creating,
marketing, selling and licensing a host of Chromacore-based digital
lighting products."
Color
Kinetics co-founders Mueller and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Ihor
Lys are named as inventors on the patent. Both are graduates of
Carnegie Mellon University, and both are continuing to lead the
development of exciting new technologies that will further advance
Color Kinetics' mission to create a more bright and colorful world.
