COLOR KINETICS PUTS THE "POP" IN 'N SYNC'S 2001 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS PERFORMANCE
Company's Groundbreaking LED-based Digital Lighting Technology
Key to Bringing 'N Sync's Colorful Vision to Life
NEW YORK - September 6, 2001 - Known for their infectious, chart-topping pop music and innovative live performances, multi-platinum selling musicians 'N Sync have partnered with another innovator, Color Kinetics, to ensure their live performance at tonight's 2001 MTV Video Music Awards stands out from the crowd. Color Kinetics' LED-based (light emitting diode) full spectrum digital lighting will dance on stage along with the band and their dancers during the performance of their hit song "POP." The 2001 MTV Video Music Awards will be held at New York's Metropolitan Opera House beginning at 8 p.m. tonight.

The set, designed by Michael Cotten and constructed by Showman Fabricators, originally called for 3-color neon. Once the designers realized the many benefits Color Kinetics' LED-based lighting technology offers, they said "Bye, Bye, Bye" to neon. The intricate set consists of close to 500 feet of Color Kinetics® iColor® Cove fixtures covered with 1" thick clear acrylic spelling the word "POP" at the center of the stage. The acrylic and iColor Cove combination is also used to create various walkways, stairways and ramps across the stage. During the performance, the lights will display a variety of effects programmed to correspond with the song and the band's choreography. This unique light show was created using Color Kinetics' ColorPlay™ light show authoring software, and is played back via Color Kinetics iPlayer® light show storage and play back device. Other components of the set include a revolving entrance wall with large, comic style digital graphics and a cut-out door.
The low voltage requirements and durability of LEDs were major reasons the designers decided to use Color Kinetics LED-based fixtures for the 'N Sync set design. Due to the fact the LEDs are used in the stage floor, it was extremely important for the fixtures to stand up to the weight of the additional set elements, not to mention the performers. Another benefit of Color Kinetics fixtures is the incredible controllability and unlimited design options they provide. iColor Cove fixtures use Color Kinetics' patented digital Chromacore® lighting technology, which utilizes microprocessor-controlled, multi-colored LEDs, to generate over 16.7 million colors and a variety of dynamic lighting effects. Each piece of 1" iColor Cove may be controlled individually, in a variety of groupings or all together to create any variety of effects. In addition to the infinite design possibilities, Color Kinetics fixtures produce extremely little heat and generate no noise, which are especially critical considerations for a musical performance of this scope.
In addition to stage and musical productions, Color Kinetics digital lighting is currently used by some of the most recognizable companies in the world, including Disney, Sony, Saks Fifth Avenue, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Harrods, Sheraton and Marriott, just to name a few. With this high-profile project, Color Kinetics hopes to continue bringing its innovative technology to even more applications across a wide variety of markets and industries.
