IALD PRESENTS 2002 AWARD OF MERIT TO A COLOR KINETICS PROJECT

Focus Lighting Inc. Garners Award for its Work on Morimoto Restaurant; Innovative Use of Color Kinetics Intelligent LED Illumination Commended

SAN FRANCISCO -- JUNE 4, 2002 -- At its 19th Annual International Design awards, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) presented an award of merit to the Morimoto Restaurant on Market Street in Philadelphia, PA. The lighting design by Focus Lighting, Inc. enhances the restaurant's dynamic architectural design through the use of Color Kinetics intelligent LED illumination technology.

At Morimoto, Food Network's "Iron Chef" Masaharu Morimoto serves up his famed Asian fusion cuisine, but delectable culinary creations aren't all that feed diners' senses. The restaurant interior resembles a magnificent piece of kinetic sculpture, cut by straight, modern lines. The eclectic space provides a feast for the eyes with walls of protruding, flowing, designs that contrast the linear seating partitions, which subtly change color during the evening through the power of Color Kinetics intelligent LED illumination technology. Color Kinetics™ iColor™ Cove fixtures were installed to light up glass partitions between each of the restaurant's booths. The rectilinear structure of the seating allows for displays of rich, varied colored light and dynamic color changing effects. The partitions have the ability to shift color from subtle white and pale tints to dramatic deep saturations via Color Kinetics patented Chromacore® digital LED technology. The final look of the restaurant maintains a balance of dramatic flare with purity of style - just like its namesake.

The IALD judges described the restaurant as "all aglow," and noted the frosted glass booths with changing fields of color as enhancing the space and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the restaurant. Accepting the award were Paul Gregory, J.R. Krauza, Jaie Bosse and Derek Wadlington of Focus Lighting, Inc. Gregory is founder and President of Focus Lighting, Inc. in New York City.

A team of eight judges, all award-winning professionals in the field of lighting design and architecture, poured over scores of entries to IALD's 19th Annual International Lighting Design Awards program, and selected 14 winners whose work they believe best exemplifies aesthetic achievement backed by technical expertise. The panel selected one award of excellence, five awards of merit and two special citations. The judges also gave honorable mentions to six projects. There were a total of 136 entries. The IALD Lighting Design Awards program, established in 1983 is co-sponsored by Architectural Lighting magazine.
