COLOR KINETICS INTRODUCES THE WORLD'S FIRST
DIGITAL COLOR-CHANGING LAMP

The iColor MR gives new meaning to the term magic lamp

March 27, 1999 — Chicago, IL — Color Kinetics Incorporated, the pioneer of full spectrum digital lighting, announces today the introduction of the iColor™ MR, the world's first digital color-changing lamp designed to fit in standard MR16 fixtures. This tiny marvel packs a powerful one-two punch: the convenience of using standard fixtures and the ability to produce a broad range of beautiful colored lighting effects. Along with its many practical capabilities, the iColor MR truly is a "magic lamp."

One breakthrough feature is the iColor MR's design: it is the same size as a standard MR16 lamp, so it will fit into most low voltage fixtures made for those lamps. Just choose the desired effect, plug it in, and it runs beautiful colored lighting effects.

The form of the iColor MR, however, is where the similarities to conventional MR16 lamps end. The iColor MR uses Color Kinetics' patent-pending technology, Chromacore™, to generate over 16.7 million colors using a microprocessor and RGB color mixing of LEDs (light emitting diodes). The iColor MR's built-in intelligence runs an assortment of lighting shows such as color cross fades, color washes, random color changes or constant colors. This digital light generation differs from ordinary lighting techniques which require motors and filters over white light sources to produce colors and color effects.

In addition to magnificent colors, one of the many advantages is its ultra long source life. The iColor MR incorporates LEDs whose predicted source life is rated at 100,000 hours, up to 20 times the life of conventional MR16 lamps. The iColor MR uses little power, produces virtually no heat or UV emissions, and produces dynamic color without moving parts.

While it is quite remarkable that the iColor MR's built in microprocessor means that no external controller is required, it is even more remarkable that it can be externally controlled via a new data multiplexing technology which will be released by Color Kinetics in mid 1999. This technology sends power and data to the iColor MR over conventional two-wire conduits, such as ordinary low voltage track. This means the iColor MR can take data from industry standard DMX512 controllers, PCs, or a range of easy to use controllers soon to be released from Color Kinetics.

"The introduction of the iColor MR makes color effects possible in virtually any application," commented George Mueller, Color Kinetics President and CEO. "Color Kinetics continues to innovate, bringing dynamic color change and discrete color control to most MR16-based fixtures." Mueller, speaking in his signature animated style, continues "this product is one more example of how Color Kinetics is leading the digital lighting revolution. We think this digital future is looking very bright and colorful."

MR16 lamps, very commonly used in track lighting, are widely employed in retail merchandising, display, and architectural applications. Now it is easy to colorize to these environments without additional fixturing or installation. Just plug the iColor MR in and design away — Color Kinetics brings design dreams to life by advancing the art of lighting into the digital age.
