Color Kinetics Turns the Tables on Complicated Authoring Tools with Easy to Use, Graphically-Based Design Software for Full Spectrum Digital Lights

Lightfair 2000 Booth #473

NEW YORK — Lightfair 2000 — May 9, 2000 — Color Kinetics Incorporated, the pioneer of full spectrum digital lighting, today announces ColorPlayTM, an innovative new lighting design software package that enables anyone to quickly and easily create and edit dynamic lighting shows for Color Kinetics' full line of digital color-changing lights. Ideal for creating light shows for retail, themed environments and architectural spaces, ColorPlay is a welcome departure from conventional lighting design software in that it enables first-time users to have professional-quality light shows up and running in minutes without the need for technical programming skills or complex, expensive lighting boards.

ColorPlay breaks the mold of traditional light show authoring tools by combining ease-of-use with powerful design and control capabilities. The true beauty of ColorPlay is that it offers all the functionality needed to design and play dynamic color-changing lighting effects in the form of an intuitive graphical interface and "plain English" feature menus. In contrast to other available lighting design software programs, which rely on multiple text-based cues to produce a single effect and may not offer mapping and effects capabilities in the same software package, ColorPlay offers drag-and-drop, effects-based design, drag-and-drop mapping capabilities, real-time show preview capabilities and full show output to storage functions in one complete product.

It's no surprise that Color Kinetics has put into its ColorPlay software the same technological innovation and colorful spirit that infuses the company's revolutionary lighting. George Mueller, President and CEO of Color Kinetics, explains: "Why shouldn't the act of creating light shows be as uncomplicated and inspiring as experiencing them?" he said. "The creative professionals using Color Kinetics lighting to make their projects shine are the innovators in their fields, but they may not necessarily have the high-end programming experience that existing lighting design software requires. For anyone who would rather spend their time truly designing, instead of entering key strokes and variables or wrestling with an elaborate lighting board, ColorPlay is the answer."

Designing with ColorPlay is visual, powerful, easy and fast. Users map out their installation, selecting from a variety of icons representing specific Color Kinetics lighting fixtures and place them on a layout grid. With ColorPlay's grouping function, users can easily set the same effect for multiple lights in an installation. ColorPlay uses a graphical timeline-based show management system to bring designers' visions to life through up to 16.7 million colors and a full library of colored lighting effects, including Color Wash, Cross Fade, Random Color, Chasing Rainbow, Fixed Color, Strobe and the new Sparkle effect. The effects can be varied by characteristics including saturation, speed and direction. ColorPlay also offers priority assignments for effects enabling users to assign multiple effects to one light, as in layering an eye-catching sparkle effect over a color wash. Once the specific effects are placed and customized on the timeline, users can preview their lighting shows in real-time -- either on the PC using ColorPlay's built-in simulation function, or running on the lights themselves -- before saving and storing their designs. Once a show is final, ColorPlay's output function can store shows on one or multiple playback units.

Designed to run the entire Color Kinetics family of digital color-changing lights, ColorPlay is part of Color Kinetics' complete solution for creating visually striking displays, settings and environments with color and light -- from the first glimmer of a design idea to the final lighting configuration and show. ColorPlay outputs a DMX512 data stream, and can create shows for up to 170 unique DMX addresses and an unlimited number of light fixtures. These shows can then be stored and played back using the new Color Kinetics™ iPlayer®device, allowing designers to inexpensively run these shows while maintaining creative control and achieving consistency for their light show vision (see press release from 5/9/00, "Color Kinetics Puts Light Show Control in the Palm of Your Hand"). ColorPlay is Java-based, enabling it to run on multiple software platforms. Documentation is available in both print and online formats.

With the introduction of ColorPlay at Lightfair 2000, Color Kinetics hopes to build on its string of previous successes at the conference, where its C-Series was named "Best New Product of the Year" in 1998, and the company and its iColor Cove were honored with the first annual "Roeder Award" at Lightfair '99.
