COLOR KINETICS AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAM COD

Company Creates a "Cod of Many Colors" for Boston's "Cavalcade of Cod" Charity Auction with Proceeds to Benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Boston

BOSTON - December 1, 2000 - One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish! No it's not a new nursery rhyme, it's a description of Color Kinetics' one-of-a-kind contribution to the City of Boston's "Cavalcade of Cod" charity auction and event. The Cavalcade of Cod -- part of "B2K: Events of the Millennium," a series of year-long special events created by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino to usher in the new millennium -- is a public art exhibit that brings to life nearly 100 fiberglass fish, decorated by professional artists, children and celebrities, and puts them on display throughout the city. The entire event will culminate on December 8 when all the cod are auctioned off, and the proceeds are donated to local charities designated by the cod sponsors. In typical Color Kinetics fashion, the company has captured the fun and whimsical nature of this program through the use of its revolutionary Chromacore® lighting technology, setting the Color Kinetics Cod aglow in brightly colored light and dynamic color-changing effects -- all in an effort to bring awareness to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Boston.

Color Kinetics' cod of many colors, titled "White Cod Nebulae," radiates brilliant, changing colors from within its sleek rubber-upholstered skin. Viewers can watch the lights as they change from blue to magenta, to green and every color in between. The lights inside are actually Color Kinetics full spectrum digital lighting fixtures, which are powered by the company's patented Chromacore digital lighting technology. Drilling holes in a random pattern throughout the body, the artists - Colin Piepgras, a mechanical/design engineer for Color Kinetics, and his wife Leah -- inserted three light fixtures inside the cod, illuminating the entire fish. The cod is currently on display in the Copley Society of Boston, America's oldest art association, located on Boston's famous Newbury Street - often referred to as the Rodeo Drive of Boston. Visitors and passersby are challenged to try and spot all of the 16.7 million colors possible with this amazing technicolor dream cod!

The Cavalcade of Cod recognizes Boston's historic beginnings when early settlers were sustained through their first winters by eating salted cod, and subsequently developed a thriving industry based on this "fish that changed the world." The Cavalcade of Cod charity program unites the Boston community, with businesses and individual philanthropists sponsoring the cods, which are then designed themselves or by local artists. Displayed throughout Boston during the fall, the cod have delighted locals and tourists alike. On December 8, the catch will be hauled back in, and sold at an auction event to be held at the Massachusetts College of Art, with the proceeds benefiting a variety of local charities and art education programs. Color Kinetics has designated Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Boston as the local organization to receive the proceeds of its cod.

"Boston has proven to be a wonderful and supportive community in which to build our upstart technology company. The Cavalcade of Cod is a great way for us to give something back to the city, and to support the important work of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters association," says George Mueller, President, CEO and Cofounder of Color Kinetics. "We've always said there are millions of uses for Color Kinetics' technology; well, we've proven it by putting it into a fiberglass codfish!" he exclaims.

The lucky bidder who takes home the Color Kinetics cod will now have a unique and interesting piece of art allowing them to incorporate light and color into any environment they choose. And with Chromacore technology, it's never been easier. Chromacore-powered fixtures require little, if any, maintenance. They produce almost no heat, use very little power, are completely silent, and have a source life of 100,000 hours (that's 11.4 years of continuous 24-hour usage!). So all the new owner has to do is plug it in, and let the show begin!

Color Kinetics is sure to plan an exciting follow up. So keep an eye out - you never know where Color Kinetics lights will turn up next!
