INTERNATIONAL LIGHTING DESIGN COMPETITION HONORS DESIGN FIRMS OF
TWO COLOR KINETICS INSTALLATIONS
Awards presented for SmithGroup's design of the McNamara Terminal/ Northwest World Gateway, Stone Mountain Lighting Group's design of Harrah's Atlantic City Resort & Casino
Boston, MA - August 14, 2003 - The design firms of two extraordinary installations enabled by Color Kinetics' intelligent LED illumination technology were recently honored by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) with international illumination design awards. Color Kinetics' systems and expertise were integral to the implementation of both projects, which exemplify the vast creativity that intelligent LED systems allow.
SmithGroup, a national architecture and engineering firm, received the IESNA's Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award of Distinction for its interior lighting design of the passenger tunnel at the McNamara Terminal/Northwest WorldGateway, Detroit Metro Airport. In addition, the Stone Mountain Lighting Group was presented with IESNA's Paul Waterbury Award of Excellence for the firm's outdoor lighting of the bay tower expansion at Harrah's Atlantic City Resort & Casino.
Both firms received the awards during the IESNA Annual Conference, August 5, 2003, in Chicago, IL.
The 800-foot passenger tunnel at new McNamara Terminal/Northwest WorldGateway is solely illuminated by intelligent LED-based systems from Color Kinetics. SmithGroup conceptualized an ever-changing, mood-enhancing sound and light environment. Comprised of sculpted art glass panels, translucent Newmat stretch ceilings, custom, choreographed music, and Color Kinetics' systems, the tunnel envelops passengers in a captivating blend of color, light, and sound. Nearly 9,000 feet of custom iColor® Cove and120 ColorBlast® systems were installed to bring the ambitious lighting design to life with minimal maintenance requirements.
The lighting of the 28-story bay-tower expansion at Harrah's Atlantic City Resort & Casino was designed and programmed by Stone Mountain Lighting Group, whose plan called for bands of programmable LED-based lights to wrap around each separate level of the building. As a result, 4,100 linear feet of iColor Fresco was installed to generate bands of light that perform a wide variety of specialized lighting effects, including intricate color chases, sunburst patterns, rainbow effects, dramatic color wipes, and a large scale simulation of the American flag for special occasions. iColor Fresco can be addressed and controlled in increments as small as one foot, enabling such intricate effects and sequences.
