Intelligent LED Illumination Technology Plays a Starring Role in
Theatrical Productions On Broadway and Around the World
LAS VEGAS - October 18, 2002 - As the popular song goes, "they say the neon lights are bright on Broadway." But in reality the LED lights may be even brighter! So bright they've earned a starring role in a number of Broadway productions and other theatrical productions throughout the world. In fact, Color Kinetics digital LED lighting systems currently are featured in two popular Broadway musicals, and were prominently used over the summer in an international jazz festival and a free outdoor staging of the opera Carmen.
- In Tony® Award-winning Thoroughly Modern Millie, lighting designer Don Holder and set designer David Gallo chose Color Kinetics® iColor® Cove fixtures over neon to add vibrant color and split-second color changes to the show's Manhattan skyline backdrop. The ruggedness of Color Kinetics iColor Cove fixtures, along with their brightness, ease of use, ability to focus and compatibility with the show's control board made them the perfect choice over neon. From the opening act on, Color Kinetics cutting-edge LED technology is used to grand effect, making this one thoroughly modern production!
- In the buzz-generating Hairspray, the Broadway production of the John Waters cult classic movie, nearly 600 Color Kinetics C-75 fixtures are used to create points of light on a "Lite-Brite" wall, the focal point of the scenery for the show's teen TV dance program. With the musical's teased bouffant hairstyles and brightly colored costumes, lighting designer Kenneth Posner and scenic designer David Rockwell were challenged with creating a set that complemented and enhanced - not competed with - the action on stage. Their inspired designs do just that, elevated to a new dynamic level with colorful high-tech lighting from Color Kinetics. The low power draw, very little heat production and solid-state design of Color Kinetics' intelligent LED illumination fixtures work perfectly in the demanding environment of a Broadway stage production. More importantly, Color Kinetics fixtures provide extremely bright light output while offering the intelligent control necessary to achieve Posner's inspired vision. With all the success the show is experiencing, it looks as though Color Kinetics LED technology may be Broadway's newest star!
- For 36 years, the Montreux Jazz Festival has brought the best in music and culture to music lovers across the world. At this year's Festival, held July 5-20 in Montreux, Switzerland, it also brought Festival-goers the most advanced lighting technology with its use of Color Kinetics intelligent LED illumination products. During the 16-day festival, Color Kinetics ColorBlast® LED wall washing lighting fixtures added color and set the mood of the Festival's Montreux Jazz Club, a new "after-hours" area that premiered at this year's Festival. In a lighting design created by SCENETEC & Co, nearly 20 Color Kinetics ColorBlast fixtures were placed onstage to softly bathe the stage and its performers with rich colored light and lighting effects, enhancing the club's comfortable and relaxing mood.
- The Boston Lyric Opera closed out its summer season and capped off its 25th anniversary with two free performances of the opera Carmen staged outside on historic Boston Common. The production added even more historic value when it used revolutionary LED illumination technology from Color Kinetics. Lighting designer Paul Palazzo used nearly 20 ColorBlast fixtures to uplight a bridge and to illuminate the orchestra located at the back of the stage behind the performers. ColorBlast is rated for outdoor use in wet and damp locations, so come rain or shine, the show's producers were sure the show would go on!
