As CEO, Mr. Sims is responsible for the management, execution, and strategic direction of Philips Solid-State Lighting Solutions, including its sales strategy, expansion of its OEM and licensing efforts, and commitment to innovation and brand excellence. He previously served as President and CEO of Color Kinetics, which was acquired by Royal Philips Electronics in August 2007. In his six-year tenure with Color Kinetics, Mr. Sims led the company's sales, marketing, product development and operations, and guided its rise to profitability. He grew revenues from $16.6 million in 2001 to $65.4 million in 2006, substantially improved gross margins and cash flow, and helped the company successfully enter new vertical and geographical markets. He also oversaw the company's most pivotal milestones, including its successful initial public offering in June 2004 and its acquisition by Philips.
Mr. Sims has more than 25 years of experience growing both established and emerging companies in the consumer products and technology industries, gained through prior senior positions at Zenith, JVC and e-SIM. As President and CEO of e-SIM's Live Manuals division, he oversaw all aspects of a successful start-up, leading product development and dramatically increasing the company's customer base. During his tenure as President of the Zenith Sales Company, the organization achieved significantly improved profitability and expanded worldwide market position for key segments of its consumer product lines. Prior to Zenith, Mr. Sims was Vice President, Consumer Video Division of JVC Company of America, where he expanded the business of JVC's largest US division. He is a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Lighting Systems Division. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Color Kinetics and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Mr. Sims holds a BA in Biological Sciences from California State University, Fullerton.
David Johnson
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
As Senior Vice President and CFO, Mr. Johnson oversees all aspects of the company's Finance, Human Resources, and Supply Chain Management functions. He joined Color Kinetics in January 1998 as Vice President of Finance and was later named CFO. He has led the company's finance organization for over seven years, during which time he played a lead role in successfully managing the company's growth and financing requirements from its pre-revenue start-up stage to its current standing as a public, NASDAQ-listed company, resulting from its successful IPO in June 2004. Mr. Johnson has more than 20 years of financial management experience with specific strengths in overseeing the needs of technology start-ups and manufacturing organizations. He previously served as CFO of Aimtech Corporation, a developer of software tools used to create interactive learning applications. Here he held the senior financial position for more than four years until the sale of the company in September 1997. Mr. Johnson has also held senior financial positions for a venture-backed technology company as well as operating divisions of much larger manufacturing organizations. Mr. Johnson began his career as a CPA with Arthur Andersen & Co., serving the needs of emerging growth companies. He received a BA in Economics from the College of the Holy Cross and an MS in Accounting from Northeastern University.
Jeffrey Cassis
Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
As Senior Vice President and COO, Jeffrey Cassis is responsible for the management of numerous corporate divisions, including engineering, product and program management, manufacturing, materials management, China operations, logistics and facilities, and quality. In addition, he contributes substantially to the company's achievement of aggressive revenue projections, monitors daily operations, and bridges the crucial steps between product conception, development and distribution. He brings more than twenty-five years of experience in serving the discrete manufacturing, semiconductor and electronics industries.
Prior to joining Color Kinetics, Mr. Cassis served as president and chief executive officer for Millennial Net, a networking software company for wireless sensor and network applications. He was responsible for the strategic direction and general management of the company, and successfully positioned the company for acquisition. Mr. Cassis also served as the Senior Vice President of Sales for Brooks Automation, a provider of automation solutions and integrated subsystems to the global semiconductor and related industries. He held a number of senior management positions over his long tenure with Brooks, serving as a key contributor to the company's growth in revenue. In addition, Mr. Cassis served as the Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for FASTech (which was later acquired by Brooks Automation); Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Intellution, Inc.; and also held product marketing roles at Analog Devices, Inc. and Foxboro Company. Mr. Cassis received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut, Master's degrees in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science from Yale University, and a M.B.A. from Boston College.
Ihor Lys
Chief Scientist
Dr. Lys co-founded Color Kinetics in 1997 and now serves as Chief Scientist. He is responsible for the company's strategic technology advancement and implementation, including applied research and advanced engineering in the development of new lighting, power and control products. Working closely with the executive team, he helps to formulate corporate strategy and product vision, addressing both near-term and forward-looking market opportunities. Prior to his current position, Dr. Lys served as Chief Technology Officer for more than eight years. During that time he led the development of the company's breakthrough Chromacore®, Chromasic® and Powercore® technologies, which continue to support and differentiate its lighting systems. A prolific inventor, he has contributed to more than 30 issued patents and numerous patent filings. He has been named to several prestigious industry lists, including the Technology Review TR100, Mass High Tech All-Stars, and Entertainment Design magazine's 50 Most Powerful People in Entertainment Technology.
Prior to Color Kinetics, Dr. Lys founded and served as CEO of ILYS Software (1991-1996), and worked for the Field Robotics Center at Carnegie Mellon University (1987-1991). A frequent speaker at industry conferences and events, Dr. Lys received his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (1987-1998). His PhD Thesis focused on low power CMOS circuit techniques based on reduced voltage swing signaling.
Fritz Morgan
Chief Technology Officer
As Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Morgan leads Color Kinetics' product vision and positioning, as well as its technical vision and direction. This includes technology development and validation to foster new product concepts, supervision of the strategic product roadmap, and overall technical direction for the company's growth within the competitive landscape. Mr. Morgan joined Color Kinetics in 1998 and previously served as Vice President of Engineering for more than four years. He was instrumental in the creation and development of the company's product lines, and was a significant contributor to numerous issued and pending patents. He also led teams in the design of many custom and high-profile lighting projects.
Prior to joining Color Kinetics, Mr. Morgan was a research scientist at Mitsubishi Electric Research Lab, where he developed surgical simulators. While studying at Carnegie Mellon University, he co-developed a novel augmented reality system used to guide a surgeon during a medical procedure, as well as the HipNav image guided system that is being commercialized by CASurgica (a company he helped to create). He is a co-author on a number of referred journal articles and co-editor of the NSF workshop report "Robotics and Computer Assisted Medical Interventions." Mr. Morgan holds a BS from Clark University and an MS in Electrical and Computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon with a focus in robotics under the advisement of Takeo Kanade.
John Biasi
VP Product Development
Mr. Biasi manages the product development organization for Color Kinetics, delivering new products and extending existing product across the company's operating divisions. Mr. Biasi brings over 20 years of experience in technology and product development, management and operations.
Prior to joining Color Kinetics, he served as COO for Millennial Net, a low-power wireless sensor networking software, systems and services company. Under his leadership at Millennial Net, Mr. Biasi successfully repositioned the company, leading product development and manufacturing divisions, for its sale to a large private European company. He served as the general manager of the Software Solutions division at Brooks Automation, a leading provider of automation to the semiconductor industry. Mr. Biasi started his career as a co-founder of FASTech Integration, a venture backed enterprise software company; and received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Buffalo and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University.
Ellen Bossert
VP Marketing
Ms. Bossert leads Color Kinetics' worldwide marketing and brand strategy. She is a seasoned business and marketing executive with sixteen years of experience in the high-tech and consumer products industries. Prior to joining Color Kinetics, she served as CEO of Zoesis Studios, a developer of unique artificial intelligence-based entertainment technology for commercial use. Her marketing experience includes leadership roles at well-established companies such as Hasbro and Converse, as well as high-tech start-ups Domania (an award-winning real estate software firm) and MIT Media Lab spin-off Presto Technologies (an early pioneer of RFID technology). Complementing Ms. Bossert's success in marketing is a strong background in management, including a Vice President role at Chase Manhattan Bank, and executive consulting to small and medium-sized businesses. Ms. Bossert holds a BA from Columbia College and MBA from Harvard Business School.
John Daly
VP Strategic Sales
Mr. Daly oversees Color Kinetics' worldwide strategic sales and support activities, including the identification and closure of new partnerships intended to increase the use of the company's technology across diverse markets. He joined Color Kinetics in July 2006 with more than 17 years of lighting industry sales and management experience, including specific expertise in OEM sales. He most recently served as President and General Manager of the 68-year-old Rig-A-Lite division of AZZ Inc. (NYSE: AZZ), a specialty electrical equipment manufacturer. He previously held sales and OEM management positions at Venture Lighting, GE Lighting and Philips Lighting. Mr. Daly holds a B.S. in Business from Michigan State University.
Kevin Dowling
VP Innovation
As Vice President of Innovation, Dr. Dowling oversees many programs and initiatives designed to keep Color Kinetics at the forefront of LED lighting. He joined the company in early 1999 as Director of Engineering, and continues to be integral to the research and development fueling many of Color Kinetics' successful products, technologies and market applications. He is an inventor and co-inventor on numerous Color Kinetics patents, and also leads the company's government programs. Beyond his work at Color Kinetics, Dr. Dowling actively engages with many industry organizations to advance adoption of LED lighting, including the creation of much-needed industry standards. He currently serves as Technical Chairman of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Solid-State Lighting Section, and as Chairman of the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance (NGLIA). He was instrumental in the formation of the Solid-State sub-committee within the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Testing Procedures Committee (TPC). Dr. Dowling is also active within the education community, teaching lighting at the New England Institute of Art and lecturing at many lighting and design programs. He is a well-known industry advocate with numerous published articles and speaking engagements to his credit.
Prior to Color Kinetics, Dr. Dowling was Chief Robotics Engineer for PRI Automation, the leader in advanced factory automation systems and software for the semiconductor industry. He has over 15 years of experience in advanced robotics engineering at the Field Robotics Center of Carnegie Mellon University, where, as a scientist, he led a number of projects including a Lunar Rover demo, robots for Space Shuttle Inspection and Shuttle ground operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, and the Mars Rover Project. Dr. Dowling has also consulted for many companies, including Shell Oil and Apple Computer, and was a founding principal of a medical robotics company.
Dr. Dowling received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and masters and Ph.D. degrees in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University.
Daniel Gaudet
Deputy General Counsel - Licensing
Mr. Gaudet joined Color Kinetics in September 2005 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's IP licensing program and joint development activities. He was previously responsible for managing and prosecuting the company's worldwide patent portfolio. Prior to joining Color Kinetics, Mr. Gaudet specialized in intellectual property law as an associate at Wilmer Hale LLP (formerly Hale and Dorr) and Foley Hoag LLP. He also spent seven years at Northrop Grumman where he held several engineering and management positions within R&D and Production. Mr. Gaudet holds a BS in Aeronautical Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, a MS in Engineering Management from the University of Southern California, and a JD from Boston University School of Law.
Frank Hillery
VP Finance
Mr. Hillery manages Color Kinetics' worldwide finance organization. He has extensive financial management experience within both privately held and public companies, including Corporate Controller roles at Interwise, Inc., Unisphere Networks, Inc., eXcelon Corp. (NASDAQ: EXLN), and Arch Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: APGR). He previously served as Senior Audit Manager for Deloitte & Touche LLP. Mr. Hillery is a CPA and holds a BS in Accounting from Bentley College.
Peter Karol
VP and General Counsel
Mr. Karol supervises all aspects of Color Kinetics' legal strategy, including business agreements, litigation management, intellectual property, and SEC disclosure. He previously spent five years at Lycos, Inc., where he rose to the position of General Counsel. Mr. Karol previously held roles as Deputy General Counsel for Physician WebLink, Inc. and The Multicare Companies, Inc. He began his legal career in New York City as a corporate associate at Sullivan & Cromwell. Mr. Karol holds a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from Columbia Law School.
Paula LaPalme
VP Human Resources
Ms. LaPalme leads the Human Resources strategy for the company, providing leadership and vision for long-term organizational and operational effectiveness. Her charter includes helping Color Kinetics grow, working with senior leaders and management to continue developing a culture of innovation and high performance while promoting higher levels of employee satisfaction. Ms. LaPalme is an accomplished executive with over 25 years experience leading Human Resource organizations, with a strong background in developing high-growth environments through M&A, organic and outsourcing. Prior to joining Color Kinetics, she served in senior positions at LogicaCMG Inc., CGI, Tufts Health Plan, Homeowners Savings Bank and the Boston Stock Exchange. She is a member of the North East Human Resources Association and the Society for Human Resource Management. She attended Northeastern University and received certification for HR Management from Bentley College.
Ray Letasi
VP APAC Lighting Systems Sales
Mr. Letasi joined Color Kinetics in 1999 and is responsible for driving the company's Asia Pacific sales efforts, both through its direct sales force and network of regional distribution partners. He also oversees the performance of Color Kinetics Japan. Mr. Letasi has a wealth of international sales management experience, including previous roles as Color Kinetics' Vice President of International Sales and Regional Vice President of Sales for the Asia Pacific market. In those positions he oversaw the formation of new distribution partnerships and contributed to marketshare growth across multiple regions. Prior to joining Color Kinetics, Mr. Letasi held a number of management positions spanning sales, marketing and business development in the semiconductor, CD and DVD, and auto interior industries, with specialized expertise in international sales. He most recently served as North American Sales Manager for Mitsui USA, previously the sole distributor for Toyoda Gosei's Optoelectronics Department in North America. Mr. Letasi holds a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan. He also studied at the Japanese Center for Michigan Universities in Shiga, Japan.
Philip O'Donnell
VP Americas, Europe and Middle East Lighting Systems Sales
Mr. O'Donnell joined Color Kinetics in September 2005 as Vice President of North American Lighting Systems Sales and thereafter was appointed to the expanded role of Vice President, Americas, Europe and Middle East Lighting Systems Sales. In this role he leads the domestic sales force, internationally dispersed sales organization, and affiliates operating across many distribution channels. A highly-regarded lighting industry veteran, he brings extensive sales, business development, and management experience to the position. He previously spent 26 years at Strand Lighting, one of the world's leading entertainment lighting manufacturers, where he led the company as CEO for four years. Prior to joining Color Kinetics he served as Interim General Manager of Strand Lighting Asia Ltd. In addition to his sales and management expertise, Mr. O'Donnell has in-depth technical and entertainment design knowledge. He holds a BFA in Technical Design from New York University, and attended Yale University's Graduate School of Drama.
Gordon Trawick
VP Materials Management
Mr. Trawick joined Color Kinetics in 2004 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of logistics, purchasing, supply chain and information technology. Mr. Trawick is a logistics expert with more than 33 years of experience leading world-class supply chain organizations. Prior to joining Color Kinetics, he served as Vice President of Logistics at Zenith Electronics for six years. He was recruited to Zenith and played an integral part of the re-engineering and process improvement team responsible for order management and supply chain processes. These efforts resulted in dramatic cost savings and improved customer service and delivery performance. He has also held leadership positions at various companies such as Fisher Scientific, Grocer Supply Incorporated, Fleming Foods and Transcom Lines. He holds a BA in Marketing from University of Oklahoma.
