JOB FUNCTION / PURPOSE
The Optical Engineer will be responsible for basic optical designs, debugging current optical designs, and performing various experiments in the Optics Lab. This person will be responsible for helping to maintain the equipment in the Optics Lab and coordinate all measurement activity that requires optical analysis. This person should have a basic understanding of optics, especially Geometrical Optics and Illumination, and have experience with working in a lab environment.
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES / OBJECTIVES
Design various types of lens optics and reflector optics for illumination
Help coordinate all measurement activity that is done in the Optics Lab.
Show the ability to multi-task on several projects and be able to finish each project on-time.
Help ensure all equipment in the Optics Lab is properly calibrated and all work instructions are updated and in place.
EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will have a BS in optical engineering with extensive laboratory work. At a minimum the candidate should have basic course work in optics and experience with running test equipment in a laboratory.
This person should be able to work independently under aggressive timelines and date driven schedules. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must.
The candidate should demonstrate an on going commitment to maintain current with changing industry trends and breakthroughs in optics and any technical area that affects optics, such as coating or molding or manufacturing practices.
PROBLEM SOLVING
The Optical Engineer provides technical solutions and feedback to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives. The Optical Engineer must be honest with the analysis and does not stop at the first solution to a problem. At the same time the ability to know and understand when the design goals are achieved without needless extra work or little value-added activity is a must. The ability to learn technical information and design techniques quickly and finds these challenges exciting.
