JOB FUNCTION / PURPOSE - Creative Problem Solving and Design Implementation.

The Staff Designer is an integral part of the multidisciplinary Product Development Group, and will be involved in all stages of product development. The primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: Collaborating in the creative problem solving process and initial design conceptualization; Communicating ideas and conceptual designs within the Product Development Group; Creating graphic presentations for review with various internal and external groups, including Marketing, Sales and Customers/Clients; Building 3D models of designs, from initial form studies to working mechanical prototypes to visual presentation models; Supporting engineers with the implementation of a design.

PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES / OBJECTIVES

  • Collaborate with the Product Development Group to create innovative conceptual designs of new products. Support the group via sketch development, form studies, concept rendering, market research and interpretation, etc.
  • Create graphic presentations of conceptual designs for review and/or feedback from various internal and external groups, including Marketing, Sales and Customers/Clients. Final design presentations would be created to illustrate design intent to Vendors and Contract Manufacturers.
  • Assist in building 3D models of designs, from initial form studies to working mechanical prototypes to visual presentation models, either in-house or through outside vendors.
  • Support engineers through the development phase with the implementation of a design.
NATURE & SCOPE

The Designer will work within the Product Development Group and report directly to the Lead Industrial Designer. The Designer will be responsible for seeing that a product's design intent is followed through to production. This requires the ability to work effectively and fluidly with the Mechanical and Electrical Engineers during the design phase to meet the market requirements and solve problems creatively with a high level of quality and sophistication.

KNOW HOW / REQUIREMENTS

Background: A BFA, BID or comparable degree from an accredited design program and 3-5 years of relevant design experience is required. The position requires strong mechanical design aptitude and a basic understanding of electronics. Therefore, an interest or experience in consumer electronics or other similar technological design field would provide a good basis for tackling the technical challenges associated with the position. Strong communication skills are required, and the ability to interact effectively with both marketing and engineering groups is necessary. Experience with multidisciplinary team/group design settings would be highly beneficial.
  • 3-5 years design related experience.
  • Ability to generate and contribute ideas within a team setting
  • Strong self-motivation and excellent visual communication skills, including sketching, rendering and illustrating
  • Working knowledge of 2D graphic software packages, e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
  • Working knowledge of 3D modeling software packages, e.g., SolidWorks, Rhinoceros, etc.
  • Physical model making ability and experience using power tools and basic shop equipment
  • Ability to meet inflexible deadlines
  • Experience in electronics/consumer-electronics product development a plus
PROBLEM SOLVING

The Designer will be presented with a higher level of technical considerations than most typical Industrial Designers would encounter, so the individual must posses a high level of aptitude towards the more technical aspects of design. Previous work should show a driven "Form follows Function" mentality, with a focus on creative problem solving at a detailed level. The Designer will be tasked daily to diplomatically find creative compromises between Marketing driven product requirements and Engineering/Manufacturing limitations. The designer then needs to have the ability to persuade others to the merits of the solution.
