Reliability/Customer Quality Engineer

JOB FUNCTION / PURPOSE

The Reliability/Customer Quality Engineer will manage product quality issues as they arise in the field, determine root cause of failures, and recommend corrective actions in product design or manufacturing processes as appropriate. The Reliability/Customer Quality Engineer will also generate statistical reports and reliability predictions based on field data.

RESPONSIBILITIES

All activities must be completed in support of established project schedules.
  • Works with and Applications Engineering to perform failure analysis on customer returned products (RMAs), identify root causes of failures, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Works with Product Development teams and Manufacturing teams to ensure suitable corrective actions are taken in a timely manner.
  • Manages multiple testing tools, including performance testing and stress testing to identify product weaknesses and defects.
  • Generates Bug reports, product enhancement requests, quality alerts, Field Change Notices, etc.
  • Analyzes and interprets test data and prepares technical reports including statistical failure rates and reliability predictions for use by engineering and management personnel.
  • Interfaces with customers on technical issues. Provides containment actions, corrective actions and follow-up to ensure effectiveness.
  • Works with Applications Engineering to respond to customer requests for emergency service. Determines cause(s), troubleshoots and takes corrective action.
  • Works effectively with Sales and Customer Service to ensure Customer Satisfaction.
  • Works to ensure all contract manufacturers are provided with samples of the defects and the necessary corrective action is provided on time.
  • Verifies that the corrective action is effective by monitoring the relevant metrics.
  • Monitors and manages disposition of RMA material in the facility.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with best practices in failure analysis and ability to apply this knowledge to testing complex systems. (Identify probable cause and determine resolution path in a fast paced environment.)
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with multiple departments internally, and with customers.
  • Ability to effectively work with tight schedules and fast paced environment to minimize problem impact on the customer.
  • DOE, Statistical Process Control and Corrective/Preventive action training preferred.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
EDUCATION

Bachelors of Science in Electronics or Electrical Engineering from four-year college or university preferred; and three to five years experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PROBLEM SOLVING

The Reliability/Customer Quality Engineer must be comfortable managing multiple investigations simultaneously. Additionally, the Reliability/Customer Quality Engineer must be able to be completely objective and logical in each analysis so as not to be influenced by the customer's or sponsor's positions of root cause. Subjectivity must be kept to a minimum and results must be based on evidentiary analysis and not anecdotal evidence.

The Reliability/Customer Quality Engineer is accountable for:
  • Root cause analysis of product failures in the field and in manufacturing
  • Failure analysis reports
  • Communication of the analysis to customers internal and external
  • Distilling corrective and preventive actions to product development teams in design review meetings
  • Trend analysis of failure modes
  • Reliability modeling of new products in development
Customers of the reliability engineer include specific external customers, the sales team, the applications engineering team, the product development teams, as well as financial and legal representatives of the company.
